Softball Program

The Girls Softball Program has provided a great experience for thousands of girls in Merrimack. Our program provides many great activities for all types of players – from beginners to experienced players and from girls who want a recreational experience as well as girls who want the more competitive tournament team experience playing teams from other communities. The Girls Softball year starts with the pitching, hitting and fielding clinics in February and the regular season typically runs between April 1st and the end of the school year. The tournament teams play longer into the summer. The steady increase of players over the past several years show that the popularity of Girls Softball in Merrimack is stronger than ever!

In 2011 approximately 260 girls participated in 20 regular season teams, one tournament (traveling) teams and five Fall Softball team – all in all, a very successful season! The program is open to girls age 5 through 18 in both recreation leagues and the Merrimack Magic teams competing throughout the state.

In addition to the girls there are approximately 75 adult volunteers associated with the program. They include coaches, assistant coaches, and team parents. There is also a board of directors that oversees the program and is active all year long.

The following is a breakdown of the age groups for the up and coming 2016 season. This includes the Spring, Travel, and Fall seasons. Your age on Jan 1 of each year is your playing age for that year:

The Instructional and Pigtail Division is for girls ages 5 – 8 who want to get started with Softball. The emphasis here is in teaching the basic skills and sportsmanship. It is also a learning experience for some of the adults who are participating in the program for the first time. To maintain these goals, scores are not kept in instructional and pigtail division games, and all girls are given a trophy at the end of the season for their participation.

The Minor League division consists of girl’s ages 8, 9, & 10. Here the emphasis is still strong on instruction and good sportsmanship, with the introduction of competitive games. Scores are kept each game, as well as team standings. There are also play-offs, which result in a championship team being named. Each participant in this division receives an award. There is an All Star game at the end of the season, in which selected members of each team play.

The Major League division consists of girl’s ages 11 and 12. Although instruction and sportsmanship are the main goals, competition becomes more evident in this division. There are play-offs to determine a league champion and runner-up. Trophies are awarded accordingly. There is also an All-Star game in this division.

The Senior League division consists of girl’s ages 13 - 18. Although instruction and sportsmanship are still a goal, competition is very strong in this division. There are play-offs to determine a league champion and runner-up where trophies are awarded. There is also an All-Star game in this division.

The MYA Girls Softball Program also sponsors four summer Tournament Teams - one in each age division. Each year our Merrimack Magic play in a number of state and regional tournaments. The tournament season continues in the fall where our girls have a chance to play games with girls teams from other towns in the area.

The MYA Girls Softball Program provides a great experience for hundreds of girls each year. There is something for everyone who has in-terest in softball. We hope you’ll join us.
