Merrimack Youth Basketball Program

The Merrimack Youth Basketball Program is designed to provide opportunity
for players of all experience levels to play together in a competitive
athletic environment. The program fosters sportsmanship and teamwork.
Coaches are instructed to teach those values. Every effort is made to keep
the teams evenly matched, so that every player is engaged from the first
through the final weeks of the season. The program seeks to be accessible
to all players, and to improve the skills of all participants. While our program
is competitive, our main objectives are "Sportsmanship and Playing Time" for
all participants. It is important that everyone, including coaches, players, referees,
and parents, help us reinforce those goals.

There are separate Boy’s and Girl’s Divisions, each with five leagues based
on grade in school: Instructional (Grades 1 & 2); Pee Wee (Grades 3 & 4);
Junior (Grades 5 & 6); Intermediate (Grades 7 & 8); and Senior (Grades
9-12). The number of teams varies to best maintain a team size of 9 to 10 players
each.

Registration occurs in August/September. Teams are selected each season through
a draft process. The program holds “tryouts” a few weeks after registration
for all leagues except Instructional. Tryouts are an opportunity for the
coaches to gauge each player’s relative ability in preparation for the draft.
Everyone who registers during the normal registration period will be placed
on a team.

All teams above Instructional have one weeknight practice and one weekend
game per week. The practices begin the first week of November, and games
start in December. The season ends with playoffs, usually in the middle of
March. The Instructional League begins with a November Jamboree. Weekend
practice starts in December. Weekend practice/game are in January/February.

The Merrimack School System helps support Youth basketball by
donating gym time. The Town helps by providing funds for program
expenses.  With their support, the cost to participants remain low.
The program is truly a community wide effort.

While the School District and Town relieve a portion of Youth Basketball
funding requirements, a large source of revenue is our tournament
fund raiser. The Merrimack Invitational Tournament is held the last weekend
in January. It is considered one of the finest amateur basketball
tournaments in New England. Each year our tournament grows larger and gets
better. Teams have come from as far away as Rhode Island and Maine.  The
money draised from the tournament provides over 1/3rd of the funds needed to
support our program, and is an enjoyable community event.
